EcoChurch
The EcoChurch scheme, developed by A Rocha UK in partnership with major Christian denominations including the Methodist Church, supports congregations in responding to God’s call to care for creation. It provides a practical framework for integrating environmental sustainability into every aspect of church life: worship, management, community engagement, and the use of church buildings and grounds. Churches can achieve Bronze, Silver, or Gold awards by taking meaningful action, such as reducing energy use, creating wildlife-friendly spaces, promoting ethical investments, and encouraging eco-conscious teaching and discipleship. So far, twenty churches across the our District have achieved EcoChurch awards, including two prestigious Gold awards at Summerbridge and Driffield Methodist Churches, demonstrating the inspiring commitment of our congregations to care for God’s creation.
EcoDistrict
The Eco District scheme extends the EcoChurch vision across Methodist districts, encouraging collective engagement in environmental stewardship. Districts can support their churches through shared resources, guidance and collaborative initiatives, helping congregations amplify their efforts and make a measurable impact on the wider community. For the Yorkshire North and East Methodist District, EcoChurch and Eco District are central to our sustainability journey. Our commitment to these schemes reflects a broader responsibility to live out our faith through practical, environmentally conscious action.
Participation in these schemes allows the district to reduce its carbon footprint, nurture creation, and inspire communities to engage with environmental issues. More than practical changes, it represents a collective expression of faith, stewardship, and hope for the future. Together, we are building a culture of care, responsibility, and sustainability across our district for generations to come.
